From deskeng.com, October 31, 2007 – In spite of its lack of press, IRONCAD is a widely deployed MCAD system. My guess is that it has some 220,000 licenses worldwide, of which more than 30K are in the U.S. For a system that doesn’t have the greatest mindshare in these here parts, them is pretty respectable numbers.

And it’s pretty clear why. IRONCAD is highly respectable software, which is why it deserves a look. You especially should take a gander if you have feet in the 2D and 3D worlds and if interoperability is something you have to cope with. IRONCAD wins Cadalyst’s “Shining Star” award

In December of 2006, IRONCAD received Cadalyst’s “Shining Star of 2006” award. This followed IRONCAD’s successful November review in Cadalyst where reviewers awarded IronCAD an A+. Editors at Cadalyst were impressed with IRONCAD’s ability to work around the limitations of other history-based parametric modelers. Unlike other modeling systems, IRONCAD allows users to make drastic changes to models late in the design phase. IRONCAD is not constrained by history trees. Drag-and-drop is another feature editors enjoyed using, and was highlighted along with IRONCAD’s unique catalog system.

Revolutionary evolution: IRONCAD 3.0

The first solid modeler to use both ACIS and Parasolid kernels intrigues the engineering world.

New releases of software usually fall into one of two categories. Most new releases are largely evolutionary in that new features are added but the basic look, feel, and operation remain unchanged. More rarely, a new release is revolutionary in that it changes radically from its predecessors. IRONCAD 3.0 is unique in that it is both evolutionary and revolutionary. I last reviewed IRONCAD in its 2.0 incarnation for the August 1999 issue of CADALYST. At that time I was most impressed by its unique approach to the building of solid models, but a little less impressed with its 2D documentation capabilities.

Archimedes MCAD Competition

IRONCAD recently garnered top marks in the Archimedes MCAD Competition held at M/TECH '98 in Chicago (October 26-29).

IRONCAD was voted best in the competition in both Parts Modeling and Assembly Modeling. In addition, IRONCAD was singled out for four special commendations by the judges: Ease of Use, Basic Parts Modeling, Visualization and Fresh Concept in CAD.

Each team was challenged to create a computer mouse from scratch, and was judged in several categories by a panel that included the industry's leading pundits and consultants. The panel was comprised of Brad Holtz (WBH Associates, The CAD Rating Guide), Dr. Joel Orr (Orr Associates International), David Weisberg (Engineering Automation Report), and several advanced CAD users.

The Archimedes MCAD Competition is sponsored by the League for Engineering Automation Productivity and The CAD Society, and is presented by The Yares Organization.

A similar scenario transpired on the other side of the globe, where IRONCAD received awards at the PC-IT 98, incorporating CAD World and Interact in Melbourne, Australia. IRONCAD easily won both heats of the benchmarking CAD Rally beating the Microstation Modeler, CADKey (Fast Solids/Surf) and Caddsman Modeler. IRONCAD won best new product or upgrade for PC-IT 98.

IRONCAD was named best of show by CADENCE at NDES '98, in Chicago (March 16-19).
